Howe House is an 19th century Georgian style house in Windsor.
Howe House is listed on the State Heritage Register as part of ‘Hawkesbury Museum and Tourist Information Centre’ and ‘Thompson Square Conservation Area’, a townscape planned by Governor Macquarie.
GML was commissioned by Hawkesbury City Council to prepare an interpretation plan for Howe House to enhance activation and public use of the house, provide contemporary historical interpretation of its history, and introduce the rich Aboriginal history of the local Dyarubbin (Hawkesbury River) area.
Investigations of Howe House were undertaken to develop an understanding of the place and identify opportunities for interpretation. This involved a site visit, project stakeholders’ consultation, as well as desktop research reviewing previous studies, including the Howe House Conservation Management Plan (2003), archaeological assessments and other studies.
GML prepared a thematic framework that included key themes to guide the curation of content at Howe House, key hero characters through which its stories can be told, and multiple interpretive devices to enhance the visitor experience and engage audiences of all ages.
