The Power of Utopia: Living with Le Corbusier in Chandigarh
SOLD OUT: GML presents a special screening of the film ‘The Power of Utopia: Living with Le Corbusier in Chandigarh’ in Sydney’s Chauvel Cinema on Wednesday 9 October.
The construction of the Indian planned city of Chandigarh 70 years ago saw Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier complete his life’s work. Born in a time of unrest, resettlement and the Partition of India, Chandigarh stands for progress and the newly emerged democracy. His vision was to create a modern, humane and just city, built according to the “measure of man”, which allowed for a cultural life and harmonious interaction between people and nature.
In this atmospheric and thoughtful documentary, four people from different walks of life, reflect on Le Corbusier’s legacy, the city they live in, his utopian urban concepts and the cultural differences between East and West.

Celebrating the legacy of 20th century modern architecture
The appreciation and understanding of twentieth-century modern architecture has grown significantly in recent years. As communities and heritage professionals alike recognise the cultural and historical value of mid-century Modernist gems, the need for their preservation has become increasingly urgent. GML is leading efforts to identify, assess, and advocate for the conservation of Modernist places. Our team brings a deep understanding of modernism in historic places and a commitment to conserving this important part of Australia’s design history.
