Milsons Point, NSW
Cammeraygal Country
With its prominent location on Sydney Harbour and its fanciful Art Deco façade, Luna Park is one of Sydney’s most popular icons.
GML’s heritage advice helps sensitively maintain this state heritage listed site as it evolves into the future.
GML has a deep-seated connection to Luna Park, preparing its 1992 heritage conservation plan, updating it in 2015 and, most recently in 2019, developing a new Conservation Management Plan (CMP). The CMP was endorsed by Heritage NSW in January 2020 and guides the day-to-day care of the site as well as heritage approaches to proposed upgrades and renovations.
Working with unique legislation drafted to protect the amusement function on NSW Crown land, GML developed a Rides and Amusement Plan alongside site-specific exemptions to allow necessary changes and additions. These efforts clarified and streamlined approval processes, recognizing the need for rapid and continual updates to attract visitors and provide fresh, exciting experiences.
The CMP guided a $30 million investment for Luna Park Sydney (LPS) in 2021 which added new rides, amusements, and hospitality offerings.
A pastiche of styles and follies, the park has a timeless and nostalgic appeal. GML has navigated the conservation and development approval process for upgrades to many of its much-loved attractions, including the wooden Wild Mouse rollercoaster, the Rotor and Coney Island. Through the implementation of the Site Specific Exemptions in the CMP, GML undertook archaeological monitoring and reporting for new rides at Luna Park including the new Big Dipper, Boomerang and Sledgehammer.
Luna Park is a rare example of an amusement park protected by government legislation; several of the buildings on the site are also listed individually on the NSW State Heritage Register.
