The Minnamurra Rainforest Centre (MRC) is located at the base of the Illawarra Escarpment near Jamberoo on the South Coast of NSW.
Minnamurra Falls is a much loved place within Budderoo National Park. GML Heritage contributed to the Interpretation Strategy with Trigger and Chee Lam Design, to develop interpretation services through innovative storytelling on behalf of National Parks and Wildlife Services.
Developing a program of rich and engaging interpretation was a key focus of this strategy with the aim of immersing visitors in the natural and cultural landscape to support strong connections and sense of place including Aboriginal cultural heritage.
GML developed a thematic history and engaged with the community to identify the significance of the place and inform the interpretive approach. We facilitated workshops with Illawarra Local Aboriginal Land Council, NPWS staff, local stakeholders and Kiama Municipal Council.
This interpretation strategy is linked to a program of park and visitor improvement works including refurbishing the visitor centre as part of a broader revitalisation program. The new visitor centre connects and coordinates visitor facilities into a single point, including an information counter, retail, interpretation, café, functions and education. The two main walking tracks have also been upgraded with new boardwalks and lookouts constructed.
