Once complete, the Northern Beaches Coast Walk will allow community and visitors to experience 36 kilometres of spectacular coastline via a linked walkway reaching from Manly in the south to Palm Beach in the north.
The Public Art Trail will celebrate the cultural heritage and natural environment along the Coast Walk.
GML worked in partnership with Northern Beaches Council to deliver the Coast Walk Public Art Strategic Plan. The Plan outlines the community’s long-term vision and principles for commissioning artwork along the walk. The Plan was informed by a Scoping Study and an extensive program of community and stakeholder engagement. Community and stakeholder engagement was undertaken by GML in collaboration with JOC Consulting.
The Scoping Study broadly identifies cultural, historic, environmental, natural and social values along the Coast Walk and immediate environs. It identifies many of the important physical attributes and characteristics associated with key sites and places. It delivers an overarching curatorial framework to guide the delivery of artwork.
The Community and Stakeholder Engagement Program and Marketing Campaign ran from June to September 2018. Over the four-month period of engagement, over 856,539 people were made aware of the project. Of this number, 1,206 were formally engaged through face-to-face methods. At these events and activities, the community were invited to share their concerns, interests and artistic aspirations for the Coast Walk as part of the development of the Plan.
The Strategic Plan was endorsed at the May 2019 Northern Beaches Council meeting.
