The Goods Line
The Goods Line is an award-winning pedestrian and cycle way that connects George Street, Sydney, to the Powerhouse Museum along a historic rail line.
As part of a large multidisciplinary team led by ASPECT Studios and CHROFI, GML was engaged to assess heritage impacts and plan heritage interpretation.
Our assessment of heritage values and potential development impacts informed the design documentation and approval process. We also advised on the underbridge’s conservation and adaptive re-use.
As part of the interpretation strategy, GML established the key themes, prepared the interpretive content and selected the historical imagery used in signage designed by Deuce.
GML named the project ‘The Goods Line’, now celebrated in neon on both sides of the Pyrmont Underbridge—a rare mid-nineteenth-century industrial structure that has been transformed into a pedestrian walkway.
Today, the former rail corridor is alive with students, city workers and visitors, reconnecting a significant piece of Sydney’s industrial heritage with the contemporary city.
