National Archaeology Week showcases Australia’s unique archaeological heritage and GML’s team enthusiastically joined in, writes Heritage Consultant and Archaeologist Cat Munroe.
National Archaeology Week is an annual nationwide program of events that showcases Australian archaeology and highlights the importance of our complex and unique archaeological heritage.
A wide range of events provide both the public and heritage professionals an opportunity to learn about recent projects, new techniques, technologies and research in archaeology, as well as to connect and socialise with industry peers.
GML archaeologists dug into the opportunity to attend and present at several events, including the Planning Institute of Australia’s Planning Congress in Melbourne, the Sydney Historical Practitioners Workshop (SHAP), which celebrated its 21st year, a Waverley Cemetery Walking Tour, and a Women in Archaeology panel discussion which celebrated a group of inspiring female archaeologists and their remarkable careers, including our Head of Archaeology (NSW), Abi Cryerhall.
In Canberra, GML Principal Martin Rowney presented at the Backyard Archaeology Symposium about the humble red brick and was also interviewed by ABC Canberra about the iconic Canberra Brickworks.
Additionally, the GML team hosted a ‘lunch and learn’ session, allowing our archaeologists in Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra to showcase some of GML’s most recent projects to all staff. Thanks to Declan Coman, Leah Tepper, Jacob Gwiazdzinski, Cat Munro, and Martin Rowney for sharing their insights!
The team thoroughly enjoyed National Archaeology Week. We were able to share exciting tales of recent excavations and highlight influential findings, while a wealth of information and new research was presented by other industry leaders. We extend our thanks to those who took to the stage and to the many organisers who put on these well-received events.
