Congratulations to consultant Kristine Slawinski on the publication of her new book Melbourne Heritage Interiors.

Drawing on her design and heritage interiors expertise, Kristine and graphic designer Phil Campbell bring to life some of central Melbourne’s most remarkable historic interiors — from long-standing private clubs to long-lost coffee palaces — through evocative archival images and beautiful contemporary photographs.

Although exterior architecture is often celebrated, interiors can offer a deeper understanding of a place, revealing its character, stories, and the ways people have interacted with it over time.

The publication explores more than 100 interiors, tracing their design, history, and contribution to Melbourne’s evolving identity.

Spanning Victorian, Moderne and Mid-century styles, Melbourne Heritage Interiors is a thoughtful celebration of interiors as expressions of cultural memory.

ANZ Gothic Bank - The elaborate interior of the ground-floor chamber of the former ES&A Bank (now known as the ANZ Gothic Bank) is the result of a collaboration between architect William Wardell and his client, the manager of the bank, George Verdon in the 1880s and is a true work of art, with its exquisite Gothic style craftsmanship. The chamber now houses the ANZ’s banking museum, which is open to the public. Photo: Phil Campbell
