GML at the 15th Victorian Archaeology Colloquium

GML attended the 15th annual Victorian Archaeology Colloquium at La Trobe University on 6 February 2026. Senior heritage consultant and archaeologist Celeste Wing Young shares her highlights.

Opening with a Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony by Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung man Thane Garvey, the Melbourne archaeology team spent the day listening to and learning from colleagues presenting on both Aboriginal cultural heritage and historic archaeology.

This year’s program explored a broad range of themes, including Traditional Owner‑led discussions on self‑determination and emerging heritage governance models, innovative archaeological techniques, notable discoveries in historic archaeology, and the complexities of maritime heritage investigations.

A standout presentation from the Bunurong Land Council Aboriginal Corporation (BLCAC) examined in detail the long‑term land use of Nerre Nerre Warren (Dandenong Police Paddocks Reserve). Through community‑led archival research and cultural values investigation, the project uncovered numerous previously undocumented historical records, offering a deeper understanding of land use at the reserve from its establishment in the late 1830s to today.

In partnership with BLCAC and on behalf of Parks Victoria, GML participated in an archaeological survey of the site and concurrently undertook a comprehensive cultural heritage investigation into the values associated with this cultural landscape to inform the Dandenong Police Paddocks Masterplan.

Across the program, speakers reinforced the importance of collaboration with Traditional Owners, deep knowledge of Country, and the integration of scientific and cultural approaches to effectively understand and manage heritage landscapes.

The Colloquium once again affirmed its role as an important annual forum for sharing archaeological research and strengthening relationships across Victoria’s heritage sector. As a sponsor of this year’s event, GML was proud to support a gathering that brings together such a passionate community of practitioners.
