Hyde Park Barracks
The World Heritage-listed Hyde Park Barracks is one of the most significant convict sites in the world and now a major Sydney cultural and tourist destination.
Since 2016, GML has provided archaeological and heritage services during several construction, upgrade and signage projects at Hyde Park Barracks.
GML provided archaeological advice to Sydney Living Museums (now Museums of History NSW) and monitored the exterior works program during a major renewal project at the barracks to help manage and protect the highly significant buried archaeological resource beneath the site, which forms a major component of its World Heritage value. During these works our team also undertook analysis of soil and pollen samples to provide further insight into the site’s history.
Other services GML has provided at the Hyde Park Barracks include archaeological research design, excavation, artefact cataloguing, post-excavation analysis, and archaeological advice and assessment across several projects, including the installation of digital signage within the Queens Square forecourt, installation on in-ground lighting and improvements to hydraulic services at the site.
