Woodleys Shipyard at Berrys Bay

Western Harbour Tunnel is a major transport infrastructure project being delivered by Transport for NSW. The project includes the delivery of Berrys Bay foreshore parkland, transforming a former industrial site into a vibrant and accessible public space.

The new public space, prepared by DesignInc for Transport for NSW (TNSW) and delivery partner ACCIONA, will reconnect people with Sydney’s iconic harbour, restore views across the water, reflect the site’s rich and layered history, and create welcoming spaces for recreation, gathering and connection with nature.

A reimagined Woodleys Shed will form a key feature of the foreshore parkland, serving as a new community pavilion. The former Woodleys Shipyard site holds deep historical significance, having played an important role in Sydney’s maritime history while remaining a longstanding local landmark. The site is listed as a local heritage item under the North Sydney Local Environmental Plan 2013.

GML provided ongoing heritage advice to TNSW throughout the design development of the Woodleys Shipyard site as part of the Berrys Bay transformation. This included preparing a Statement of Heritage Impact, developing heritage design principles, identifying interpretive opportunities, advising on design development, and undertaking photographic archival recording. More than a decade earlier, GML also prepared a Conservation Management Strategy for the site.

The pavilion design will celebrate both Aboriginal and maritime heritage, with key elements of the former Woodleys Shed, including its iconic signage, retained and integrated into the final design.
