Vaucluse House

Vaucluse House is one of Australia’s most significant historic estates. Listed on the NSW State Heritage Register, it retains an exceptional collection of early nineteenth-century buildings, stables, gardens and landscape settings.

Primarily associated with William Charles Wentworth (1790–1872) and Sarah Wentworth (1805–1880), the estate is a rare surviving example of an early colonial house with substantial original fabric, grounds and outbuildings intact. Since 1912, Vaucluse House has been open to visitors as a house museum and public park.

The place holds layered cultural meanings extending beyond its colonial history. The estate sits on Birrabirragal and Gadigal Country and contains important evidence of Aboriginal occupation and experiences, both before and after colonisation. Its landscape and history continue to hold deep connections for First Nations communities today.

Museums of History NSW engaged GML to prepare a Conservation Management Plan (CMP) for Vaucluse House and the nearby Wentworth Mausoleum. The CMP consolidates and updates decades of previous documentation, providing a clear and contemporary framework to guide the estate’s conservation, management and maintenance in line with best-practice heritage principles.

Given the complexity of the site, the project brought together expertise across heritage architecture, historical archaeology, Aboriginal cultural heritage, cultural landscapes, environmental management and climate resilience.

The CMP establishes overarching conservation policies for the whole estate and covers planning, curtilage, setting, treatment of fabric, archaeology, Aboriginal cultural management, interpretation and ongoing maintenance. It identifies key precincts and their historical, cultural and ecological values, and outlines both the challenges and opportunities that will shape the future care of this nationally significant heritage place.
