Cement Creek Redwood Forest
Located on Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Country near Warburton, the Cement Creek Redwood Forest is a muchloved destination renowned for its towering plantation of Californian Redwoods.
Listed on the Victorian Heritage Register, the site attracts thousands of visitors each year and requires careful management to balance public access with the protection of its significant heritage and environmental values.
Over the past 12 months, a series of upgrades have been undertaken by Parks Victoria to improve the visitor experience and support the long-term conservation of the site. Designed by Tract Consultants, the works included a new accessible toilet block, visitor shelter, upgraded pathways and signage, and additional parking. Melbourne Water also delivered boardwalks, viewing platforms and revegetation works along Cement Creek and the Yarra River.
GML was engaged by Parks Victoria to provide heritage advice throughout the project. Our team prepared a heritage assessment and heritage impact statement, as well as a cultural heritage management plan and permit in consultation with Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation. We also developed a heritage protection plan to guide the management and protection of the site’s heritage values during construction and prepared a heritage interpretation plan to support permit requirements and enrich visitor understanding of the place.
The project demonstrates how thoughtful planning and multidisciplinary heritage expertise can support improved access and visitor facilities while respecting and protecting the cultural, environmental and historic values that make the Cement Creek Redwood Forest such a special destination.
