Hoddle Grid Heritage Review Endorsed
Conserving the heart of Melbourne.
The Hoddle Grid was surveyed to the north of the Birrarung (Yarra River) in 1837, on Country that is a sacred and significant place for Wurundjeri Woiwurrung people and the Kulin Nation, and is at the heart of Melbourne.
The Hoddle Grid Heritage Review, completed in 2020 by Context (now GML Heritage) has been unanimously endorsed by the City of Melbourne. A six-volume study, it is one of the largest heritage reviews undertaken in central Melbourne. The Review ensures permanent protection for 126 places and five precincts that embody many of the rich stories associated with Melbourne’s history and identity.
In this first comprehensive review of heritage places undertaken since the 1990s, Aboriginal and post-settlement places and stories are recognised and interwoven into the city’s heritage. The Review engages with thematic and spatial analysis in new ways, revealing a richer and more nuanced understanding of the cultural heritage throughout the city’s historic urban landscape.
The Hoddle Grid Heritage Review commenced five years ago. The built heritage volumes were completed in collaboration with GJM Heritage and included specialist input from Spatial Vision.
