The Rocks, Sydney NSW
The former Australasian Steam Navigation Company Building is a landmark building in The Rocks and sitting on the edge of Sydney Cove. It makes a significant contribution to the streetscapes of George Street, Hickson Road and Circular Quay West, and the maritime industrial character of the northern sector of The Rocks Precinct.
The former ASN Co. Building was constructed between 1884 and 1885 to the design of architect William Wardell. The building is a rare example of an Anglo-Dutch commercial warehouse building, with defining features including distinctive decorative parapeted gables, towers, polychrome brickwork and stone trim. It has a timber structure internally, with high quality finishes in the historic administrative office spaces in its northern most bay.
Through extensive research and assessment GML applied careful expert knowledge to understand the significance of the building and its context within Australian maritime trade history. The buildings unique architectural elements – interior and exterior – were captured through GML’s thorough recording and analysis, providing valuable insight into its varying purposes over the last century.
The CMP will assist with future conservation and adaptation of an impressive building within a significant conservation area.
