Domain Parklands Conservation Management Plan
The Domain Parklands and Memorial Precinct comprises a network of parks, gardens and open space making up nearly 123 hectares in central Melbourne. The Parklands are listed on the National Heritage Register.
GML Heritage Victoria (formerly Context) was engaged by the City of Melbourne to undertake a Conservation Management Plan (CMP) for the Domain Parklands, to inform a Masterplan being prepared by the City’s in-house staff.
The Domain Parklands, which has recently been included on the Victorian Heritage Register, provides the setting for a number of State and Nationally significant landscapes and features including the Royal Botanic Gardens, the Shrine of Remembrance, Government House and the Sidney Myer Music Bowl.
The CMP considers the significance of the individual elements and parks that make up the Domain Parklands, as well as the place as a whole. It updated historical research, assessed the many landscape and built features within the Domain including its substantial tree collection. Following discussions with major stakeholders, conservation issues were addressed and policies put forward for its future development and management.
